- What is asymmetry?
Asymmetry = two sides are not identical, but differ from one another. However, the elements are arranged so that there is a sense of balance.

Project #11: Part 1 - CREATING A MIRRORED REFLECTION IN PHOTOSHOP
1.Open 1 Symmetrical Photo (BEST OF YOUR 5) in Photoshop
-RESIZE - Around 8.5x11 300 res.
-Follow steps 3-6 below.
2. Open 1 Asymmetrical Photo (BEST OF YOUR 5) in Photoshop
-RESIZE - Around 8.5x11 300 res.
-Follow steps 3-6 below.
3. Make a mirror image. (2 copies of 1 photo)
-Duplicate your layer = Layer> Duplicate Layer
4. Image - Canvas Size - Double the width
-Select "<" (right) arrow as location
5. Move duplicate layer to right with the arrow tool.
-Flip Horizontal = Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal
6. How does it look? If not so great, try a different photo OR Cropping your photo.
7. Upload your final versions (symmetrical and asymmetrical) to your web portfolio "projects" page
-Name, "Line Symmetry Reflection" and "Line Asymmetry Reflection."
BELOW: Example of Part 1 - Asymmetry Reflection
Wed, 4/26 or Thurs. 4/27 (BLOCK DAY)
Project #12: PART II: 2 Photos - 4x Repeated
Wed, 4/26 or Thurs. 4/27 (BLOCK DAY)
Project #12: PART II: 2 Photos - 4x Repeated
- Now, Try 4 reflections of the same photo. Use both your asymmetrical or your symmetrical.
- Merge your layers. Layer>Merge visible
- Layer>duplicate layer.
- Image>Canvas size - Double your height now.
- Select duplicate layer and move to bottom of canvas.
- Flip Vertical - Edit>transform>flip vertically
- Flatten image - Layer>Flatten image.
- Repair any seams between photos. You will have to zoom in and use brush tool.
9. Submit both your 4x reflections (symmetrical and asymmetrical to school loop.
-Name Symmetrical: lastname_first initial_4xs.jpg
-Name Asymmetrical: lastname_first initial_4xa.jpg
10. Upload your both final 4x reflections (symmetrical and asymmetrical) to your web portfolio "projects" page
-Name, "Line Symmetry 4x Reflection" and "Line Asymmetry 4x Reflection."
Example of Part 2 - Asymmetry Reflection 4x
Wed, 4/26 or Thurs. 4/27 (BLOCK DAY)
Part 3- Line and Radial balance: Take 2 Photos and 3 photos outside of school (5 photos total = 5 points) *All 5 photos due by Fri. 4/28
Wed, 4/26 or Thurs. 4/27 (BLOCK DAY)
Part 3- Line and Radial balance: Take 2 Photos and 3 photos outside of school (5 photos total = 5 points) *All 5 photos due by Fri. 4/28
1. What
is radial balance?
-
. Any type of
balance based on a circle within
its design.
2. Does having radial line symmetry mean the
photo itself has to be symmetrical? NO!

Project #13: Final Mirror Tessellation Project - Flip, Rotate, Mirror
Due on Wed. 5/3 or Thurs. 5/4 (end of class)
Due on Wed. 5/3 or Thurs. 5/4 (end of class)
Project Overview:
Using 1 or more of your line photos create a mirrored tessellation. Subject matter should have prominent lines and shapes. Color is optional.
Requirements:
- Use any of your 20 line photos.
- Must duplicate, flip, and mirror image 5 or more times.
- The end effect should mimic a kaleidoscope (endless pattern).
- Make sure to combine all layers and change your image size to around 9"x11" or 11"x 9" at 300 resolution.
- Save as: lastnamefirstinitial_tessellation.jpg
- Submit to school loop under- Mirrored Tessellation Project
- Post your final composition to your website under your projects page - Title the project: Mirrored Tessellation.
