Dedication Photo & Simulating a Photographer's Style

1. Irving Penn: American photographer Irving Penn was known for taking fashion photographs, still life, and portraits.
2. Diane Arbus: Well-known American documentary photographer.

Ansel Adams: Best known for his black and white photos, mostly taken in Yosemite National Park.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:  (also see slideshow seen in class below!)
1. Dedicated to someone or a pet that has passed away - family, friends, or celebrity.
2. Mimic/Simulate style of a photographer of your choice.
3. Principle of design - Contrast. You must take a photo that shows contrast.

In the google document, answer the following questions under items 1-5.

1. Choose the person or pet you will be dedicating your photo to and answer the following questions.

  • Who is the person or pet?
  • Why did you choose to dedicate this photo to them?
  • What do you remember about him/her? Objects, places, smells, colors, sounds, etc.?
  • How could you represent them or ultimately symbolize him/her in a photo?
  • Where would you take the photo?  i.e. Location? Inside or outside?  Any objects or props?


2. Artist Research and Questions. Use websites list in left column under Photographer Approved Websites:

  • Who is the artist and what is the name of the website?
  • What style is their work? (portrait, landscape, abstract, black and white, color, etc.)
  • What are the main characteristics of his/her work?  Describe it.  Think about texture, color, balance, pattern, and other principles or elements of art.
  • How would you define their style to someone who has never seen their images?

 

4. Find 5 photos by the artist that you feel you would like to emulate in your dedication photo.  Place photos on the document.


5. Now, with your Person chosen and Photographer chosen.  Brainstorm 5 Ideas for your photoshoot. Write these 5 ideas in your document with #1 (person info.) and #2 (artist research).

   -Make sure to think about symbolism and the style of the artist!

  4. Select icon with four boxes.
  5. Take a screen shot (shift - apple - 4)

2. GO to web portfolio tab on class website and complete Blog #7 or see below.
     -Enter results on your website as Blog #7.

  1. Enter your results from this critique to your blog. This should be blog #7 on your website.

-Title blog: Days of the Dead Partner Photo Critique

-You do not have to type the questions, just your answers to the questions.

-Blog directions is outlined above or on the web portfolios page under Blog #7.


2. Finalize your Days of the Dead Photo. The finished/edited photo is due on Tuesday, October 6th at the beginning of class.

  • You can adjust the levels in the black, mid tones, and white point as practiced last week.
  • Should you crop the photo?
  • Is this photo your best possible work? If not, how could you improve it?
3. Submit your project into google classroom if you are finished. Due by beginning of class Friday, 10/28.
  • Check your image size! Make sure it is 300 resolution and about standard paper size (8.5inches by 11inches or 11inches by 8.5inches)
  • Save your final photo as:  Last Name_First Name_dayofdead.jpg
        Ex. Nelson_Brooke_dayofdead.jpg
  • Submit to google classroom assignment  “Day of Dead Project - Final Photo”
