WARM-UPS!

1. Take photo: 10-15 minutes
  • Use the designated area to photograph
•-Take at least 1 photo using the composition strategy.

Semester 2 Warm Ups -
Practicing Photography Techniques

1. Portraits - Richard Avedon Style  Wednesday, 1/11/17

YOUR WARM UP:

Classic Portraits in the style of Richard Avedon.

-Simple backgrounds

-Focus on lack of emotions…capture the rawness of the person.

-Black and White


Two Photos:

1.Individual Photo of 1 person
2.Group Photo of 2 or more people.

HOW TO TURN IN 2 Photos:

1.Add photos to your website under warm ups. Title - Richard Avedon Portrait 
2. Turn in your two photos to to google classroom as separate jpeg files. (8 x10in. at 300 resolution)
    -Name files: lastname first initial_portrait 1
                          lastname first initial_portrait2

Portraits - Cut out person  Thursday  1/12/17 
-Just Practice! No need to turn in or post to website:)
-I will check in class for completion.

A. Cut out person #1


Directions From Video

Use the photo below and cut out person and place on background. Place on cut out on white background

1. Duplicate layer (Layer- duplicate layer)
2. Using the lasso tool circle around the girl - Isolate girl from the background.
3. On top menu bar select the the define edge button.
4. Under "Edge detection" select the radius - slide up to 50-70% (Enough to not loose part of the image)
    -Choose black background
    -Select under output - decontaminate color. Use your mouse and target to edit areas needed.
5. Select "Ok" and you will be brought back to your image.
6.Select - (Command - Shift- I) and invert your selection, so your background will be selected not the man
7. Delete the background by selecting (Command - X)
8. Make a new layer - (Layer -New Layer). Make the background black by selecting black.
9. If you lost some of the details in any of the man's face,hat, or clothing. You can duplicate your layer mask layer.  Select brush tool. Make sure color selection is black (Black reveals and white conceals in layer masks).  Adjust the opacity and flow to best suit your selection.
10. If you need to erase more, select the eraser tool (adjust opacity and flow if needed).
11. Flatten image - (Layer - Flatten image)
12. Save Image - (Go to File-Save as - Name file -Portrait1-Select jpg as file type.)
13. Upload to your Warm Ups Page - and name "Cut out person #1"

Warm Up #2:  Cut out Portrait and place on background. (Merging 2 photos) Friday, 1/13/17

 *Use your own photos NOT ones below!


1. Cut out person in your Richard Avedon warm up or any other photo of your own and place on any background (landscape/setting). The best background could be a landscape photo or a photo with a setting for the person to reside in. 


2.Post your final photo to your website's Sem. 2 Warm Ups & Title "Portrait on Background"


3. Turn into google classroom under assignment, Sem. 2 Warm up #2 "Portrait on Background"

* Make sure to set the resolution the same as your portrait photo - around 8.5" x 11" at 300 resolution is best.

Warm Up #3: Personality Triptych
-Google slideshow (link here)

Warm Up #2: Take candid personality photographs of the person you are assigned to in class. 

-Make into a triptych
-Post to your Website

Photoshop Sizing:
1. Make canvas size 12x18 at 300 resolution


This warm up is to help you understand and practice for Project #2 - Personality Triptych. (See details below)
-Create a triptych of a person that captures their personality.
-Can be a stranger or someone you know.
-Black and white or in color.
-DO NOT turn in one from school! This is an outside of class assignment.

 

Warm Up #4: Candid Street Photography
Google Slideshow (link here)

Task: Take 10 or more candid street style photographs outside (2 minute time frame)


2 teams - Taking turns being the “streets”


Team 1:  First are the Photographers - have to keep moving/walking and taking photographs.

Team 2: The “street people” - Can be walking, talking, standing, sitting. In groups or alone. Can not look at photographers! Have to move every 30 seconds. May say “freeze” occasionally.

Warm Up #5: Overlay Living vs. Inanimate Object

Practice overlay:  Take 1 photo of a pattern of inanimate/non-living object (brick wall) and take 1 photo of living thing (person, flowers, plants). Combine using blend mode in layers using Photoshop – see video.


1. Combining Nature with man-made objects: Pattern and Textures


-You choose photos to combine. Must be your OWN photographs!


*THIS IS PRACTICE. You should not use this for your final project!!


DIRECTIONS:
-Open both photos
-Make sure to check resolution (match them both)
-Go to layers panel. 
-In drop down menu choose "overlay"
-Adjust opacity as needed.
-Go to tool bar - Image -Flatten image
Save on desktop for credit.
